As a business grows and expands, it is
important to maintain data connectivity to ensure the continuity of
the business. This can sometimes mean that two geographically disparate
locations must somehow be able to share information electronically.
At the same time, it is also important to maintain data security while
the information is being transfered. This provides a challenge for
companies to find a cost effective way of ensuring data security while
allowing these types of connections.
One solution to this problem is to maintain dedicated network cables
between the locations. These cables would be dedicated to the transfer
of the companie's data and secluded from any "prying eyes"
that may seek to gain unauthorized access to this sensitive information.
This solution (called a Private Network) is obviously not cost effective
especially for locations that are separated by long distances.
BIOS Technologies is able to implement a Virtual Private Network
(VPN) with software utilizing the Open Source applications FreeS/WAN.
FreeS/WAN uses encryption technologies to protect data transferred
between locations over the publicly accessible networks that comprise
the Internet. This use of existing networks eliminates the high cost
of establishing a private network between locations.
Alternatively,
VPN technology can be used to provide users remote access to business
resources. Users can log in from any location and use file/print,
web, and other resources. BIOS Technologies uses the Open Source
application PoPToP
to provide this functionality. PoPToP utilizes encryption technology
to ensure data security while providing traveling or remote users
to share the same resources as local users.
A Virtual Private Network utilizing FreeS/WAN and PoPToP can provide
a powerful solution for connecting geographically disparate locations
and users. Utilizing a BIOS Technologies VPN solution provides
the following benefits:
|
- Lower cost of ownership
- Connect geographically disparate locations
|
- Data Security
- Allow remote users to share business & computing resources
