The increasing popularity
of Local Area Networks (LANs) has also increased the demand for shared
resources on those networks. Two of the most common types of resource
sharing on LANs are file and printer sharing. These techniques allow
a number of users to share a set of common files and utilize a set
of shared printers to do their work.
In the past, the popular choice for file and print servers has been
a Microsoft® Windows® NT or 2000 solution
due to the ease of integration with Windows® desktop
software. However, in the past couple of years, advances in solutions
based on OpenSource software technologies have started to take over
some of the market share.
BIOS
Technologies utilizes an OpenSource application named Samba
to implement most of the same functionality as a Microsoft®
Windows® file/print server. Samba allows file and printers
to be shared in the same way that a Windows® file/print
server does. Samba also provides mechanisms to handle user logons,
host name caching, and roaming profiles (e.g. a user has the same
desktop environment no matter which workstation he/she logs in to).
The following outlines the functionality and benefits of using a BIOS
Technologies file/print solution:
|
- Lower cost of ownership
- Network file sharing
- Network printer sharing
- Centralized location
- Backup strategy is simplified
- Single point of administration
|
- File security
- Windows®-type Domain Controller
- User domain logins
- Increased resource security
- Easy integration with Windows® desktop software
